Online card transactions quadrupled in the last 5 years


In the first nine months of 2014, nearly TL 30.5 billion ($13.4 billion) was spent shopping online in Turkey, four times the total spending in 2009. According to the online credit card transactions data of Turkish Interbank Card Center, 160 million transactions were made in the period of January-September, approximately 26 million of which were abroad. In the same period of the previous year, the number of the total transactions was 142 million, which shows that online credit card transactions increased by 13 percent at home and abroad.The amount of online transactions made on Turkish cards this year increased 19 percent, reaching nearly TL 28 billion at home and TL 2.5 billion abroad, totaling TL 30.5 billion compared to the same period of the previous year.According to the data, the amount per online transaction made by Turkish cards was TL 207 at home and TL 100 abroad, averaging out at TL 189. The amount per online transaction made by Turkish cards was TL 133 in 2009, TL 147 in 2010, TL 161 in 2011, TL 169 in 2012 and TL 178 in 2013. According to these figures, the amount per online transaction made by Turkish cards has increased TL 56 from 2009 to 2014.In the first nine months of 2014, the number of online transactions made by foreign cards in Turkey was nearly 7.9 million valued at TL 3.6 billion, which shows the amount per online transaction made by foreign cards was TL 511.
