Limit of installment payments slows credit card usage


Credit card usage slowed both in terms of newly issued cards and growth rate of total transactions in 2014, according to Interbank Card Center's (BKM) 2014 card payment systems figures which were released on Monday.The number of new credit cards issued increased only by 0.3 percent, reaching 57 million credit cards with the addition of 200,000 new cards.The total volume of payments via credit cards increased by 11 percent and reached 430 billion TL ($182 billion). The annual growth rate stood at 25 percent in 2012 and 17 percent in 2013.The new installment regulation that went into effect in February 2014 limited the number of installments in a single purchase and the number of sectors that can offer payments through installments. As a result, the share of installments within payments with credit cards decreased from 28 percent to 23 percent and was realized as 101 billion TL. However, the decrease slowed from the first quarter to the fourth, from 17 percent to 5 percent.BKM's figures showed that the total number of debit cards increased by 6 million compared to the previous year, reaching 104 million in 2014. This increase was the result of an increase on prepaid debit cards, which doubled in number from 4.7 million to 10.5 million.The total volume of payments via debit cards increased by 33 percent and reached 29.4 billion TL, maintaining the rapid growth achieved in 2012 and 2013 which had a 36 percent increase each year. The share of payments with debit cards in overall payments with card systems increased from one percent in 2002 to 21 percent in 2014.The share of online payments with cards increased from 8.4 percent to nine percent, reaching 42 billion TL.
