Poverty threshold increases by 14.4 percent to 4,094 TL


According to the regular research of the Confederation of Turkish Trade Unions (Türk-İş), the monthly food expenditure for a family of four to get sufficient nutrition, has increased to 1,257 Turkish Liras ($523).The limit of poverty, which consists of compulsory expenditures such as clothing, rent, electricity, water and heating has increased to 4,094 TL ($1,705) per month, when added to food expenditure.Türk-İş released its January results of "hunger and poverty limits" research on Thursday, conducted to reveal the living conditions of the labor class and reflection of price changes in basic consumption goods.The hunger limit has increased by 158 TL and the poverty limit has increased by 514 TL since January 2014.The monthly increase in minimum food expenditure for a family of four increased by 1,98 percent compared to December 2014, while the twelve month inflation rate on food prices was 14,34 percent. The annual increase in poverty limit was 14.4 percent. The living costs of a single person was calculated as 1,535 TL ($639) in Türk-İş's research, which represents an annual increase of 135 TL. The net minimum wage, which was 949 TL in the first half of the year, has only increased by 58 TL, the statement said.
