Foreign trade deficit decreases 37.5 percent in January


According to data released by Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) on Friday, Turkey's foreign trade deficit decreased by 37.5 percent in January 2015 compared with the same month in the previous year.According to the newly released data, exports decreased by 0.6 percent to $12.33 billion and imports decreased by 13.7 percent to $16.63 billion in January. The foreign trade deficit decreased by 37.5 percent compared with January 2014, from $6.88 billion to $4.3 billion. Seasonally and calendar adjusted exports increased by 7.1 percent while imports decreased by 2.9 percent compared with the previous month. Calendar adjusted exports decreased by 0.3 percent and imports decreased by 11.3 percent compared with January 2014.In December 2014, exports to the EU-28 decreased by 3.4 percent to $5.27 billion dollars with a 42.7 percent share in total exports. Germany was the main destination for Turkish exports, receiving $1.1 billion, followed by Switzerland with $1.46 billion, the U.K. with $944 million and Iraq with $837 million. Manufacturing industries' products covered 93 percent of all exports in January, of which only 2.6 percent were high technology and 29.1 percent were medium-high technology products.China stood at the top of the list of imports with $2.11 billion, followed by Russia with $1.9 billion, Germany with $1.31 billion, and Italy with $779 billion. Manufacturing industries' products made up 75.1 percent of total imports, of which 15.1 percent were high technology and 41.8 percent were medium-high technology products.
