New free home care practice for elderly and disabled

The government is actualizing "home care support" for the elderly, the disabled and the millions of people who are looking after them. With this support, care services will be delivered every week or every day if necessary to elderly and disabled people who live with their families or alone. All needs of an individual ranging from cutting nails and giving food, bathes and medication to watching health and psychological state will be met.

The government will extend the support via special care centers and will pay TL793 to those centers for each elderly and disabled person. Moreover, houses will be rented for elderly and disabled people in a neighborhood they want to live instead of sending them to old-age nursing facilities so that they can live in an environment they feel happy in.

İshak Çiftçi, general director of Services for Persons with Disabilities and Elderly People under the roof of Family and Social Policies Ministry, said that the aim of the support was to make it possible for elderly and disabled people to live without drifting away from their families. "Home care support will provide many advantages such as protecting family integrity, eliminating the psychology of leaving elderly and disabled people behind, delivering safe, easy and economical service at homes. Old-age nursing facilities are the last option for us. Our citizens are not happy in those kinds of isolated places," stated Çiftçi, stressing that the project is in the process of pilot scheme and it would be practiced across Turkey in the near future.

Çiftçi emphasized that "we will deliver part-time or full time free services to the elderly and disabled people at their homes within working hours on weekdays. The service will be specifically adjusted to the personal needs of each elderly and disabled individual and their basic needs, health needs and psychological needs will be met." People who are going to benefit from the practice are elderly and disabled people who are over 60 and in good mental health. People who have Alzheimer and Dementia can also benefit from the practice.

According to the information given by Çiftçi, there are nearly 5 million mentally and physically disabled people in Turkey. If we add a person whose health state is severe such as a kidney patient, the figure reaches 9 million. Additionally, there are approximately 6.80 million elderly people. Therefore, this new home care practice is of particular interest to millions of people in the country.
