Export unit value index down 9.6 pct in April

The overall export unit value index decreased by 9.6 percent in April compared to the same month in 2014, according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) on Friday. During the same time period, the overall import unit value index decreased by 15.4 percent. While foreign trade value indices were down in April, according to Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM) data, Turkey's exports also decreased by 9.8 percent to $11.8 billion compared to April 2014. Economy Minister Nihat Zeybekci said that while the volume of exports is increasing, exports in general might be less in 2015 than what was observed in 2014. In his written evaluation regarding the foreign trade index in April, Zeybekci said that due to the appreciation of the dollar and the decrease in the prices of goods, there was a negative impact on exports totaling around $20 billion. It is estimated that the effects of the dollar-Turkish lira parity and the decrease in prices of goods will end around September, and better figures are expected for the fall. Still, there is a risk of export figures falling behind 2014 figures.
