Turkish companies to raise salaries by 12 percent if min. wage becomes TL 1,300

According to a survey conducted by the consulting company Hay Group in November, companies in Turkey will raise their employees' salaries by 11.7 percent on average, if the minimum wage is increased to TL 1,300 ($338) from TL 1,000. The survey interviewed 517 companies of all sizes and sectors, and asked the participants representative of the business' policies, how the company would adjust their current wages policy in case of a 30 percent hike in minimum wage. The answers of the survey showed that domestic companies will increase salaries by 11.3 percent on average, whereas foreign companies will impose an increase of 11.9 percent. The companies are expected to go for a 17.1 percent increase in blue-collar workers' salaries, 12.8 percent for administrative personnel, 10.1 percent increase for "expert staff", 9.6 percent in management's salaries, and 8.7 percent hike for top management. Some 34 percent of the companies that participated in the survey stated that they were planning to allocate an alternative budget for the possible wage hike, whereas 28 percent have not yet revised their budget plans. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu last Thursday announced the 2016 Action Plan of the 64th government, which includes the 30 percent hike in minimum monthly wages. Davutoğlu said preparations were being made to increase the minimum wage to TL 1,300, yet further regulations would be put in place in order for employers not to suffer from this increase. Currently, around 5 million people work for minimum wage in Turkey.
