Young couples show interest in 'dowry account'


Established by the Turkish government to encourage young people to get married, the "dowry account" system received nearly 13,000 applicants in the last three months, with the value of accounts in the system totaling over TL 6.5 million ($2.21 million).The "dowry account" established by the government has drawn a great deal of attention from young people who wish to get married, as 12,900 people reportedly applied for the dowry account between April 18 to July 31. The Family and Social Policies Ministry introduced the "dowry account" for couples who couldn't marry due to financial problems. Attracting attention from young people, the account was established on April 18, 2016.Within three months, 12,900 people applied for the dowry account, and a total amount of TL 6,548,980 was saved in the dowry accounts opened in the banks countrywide. Assessing the great interest from youth in the system, Family and Social Policies Minister Fatma Betül Sayan said the dowry account will make an important contribution to the happiness and future of young married couples, allowing them to buy domestic appliances and other needs, thanks to the state contribution to the amount saved in their accounts. Sayan stressed that the state will stand by their citizens through thick and thin.
