Customs minister: Anti-smuggling measures effective


The Customs and Trade Minister Bülent Tüfenkçi said his ministry has run an effective campaign at the Turkish customs gates against smuggling, and stressed that along with the measures taken at the gates, the drug trafficking route has changed its course, and Turkey has not been used as a point of passage any more.All the technical opportunities at the ministry's disposal were being used at the customs gates and inspections are conducted using the latest technology, Minister Tüfenkçi told the Anadolu Agency (AA).Noting that serious operations are in progress in order to prevent smuggling at the customs gates, Tüfençi said they have taken measures at the gates by using trained personnel, detection dogs and high-tech devices.Giving details about the Ministry's projects, Tüfenkçi continued: "We are breaking the record of recent years in smuggled cigarettes. Alongside the measures taken at the gates, drug trafficking changed its course, and Turkey has not been used as a transit point anymore."Stressing that the effective campaign at the customs gates will continue, Minister Tüfenkçi said serious arrests and achievements were made in tracking using a combination of the human element, technology and intelligence regarding the smuggled goods. He suggested that their thoroughness and projects will continue to go on.Tüfenkçi recalled that within the scope of the operations conducted by the teams attached to the Directorate General of Customs Enforcement between Aug. 1 and Aug. 31, TL 121.6 million worth of drugs and smuggled goods were captured.
