Online spending in Turkey rises by nearly 25 percent in 2016


The total online payments made in 2016 increased by 24.6 percent to reach 68.9 billion Turkish liras ($19 billion), according to data from Interbank Card Center (BKM) gathered by Anadolu Agency.

With an increase of 17.6 percent, a total of 306.9 million transactions were made with domestic bankcards last year. Of those transactions, 256.6 million of these were carried out domestically and 50.4 million were carried out abroad.

The number of online payment transactions has increased by 109.8 percent and the total volume of payments increased by 177.9 percent over the last five years.

The average payment amount per transaction increased from TL 212 in 2015 to TL 225 in 2016. An average of TL 248 was spent in each domestic transaction, while the average payment per transactions abroad decreased to TL 107.

A total of 7.5 million online transactions were carried out in Turkey with foreign cards with a total volume of $4.9 billion. The average payment per transaction was TL 651.
