Esra Özdin, who moved from Istanbul to her husband's village, has become the boss of her own business through the Strengthening Women's Entrepreneurship in Agriculture program, which was initiated by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock.

Özdin met her husband Necmi in Istanbul 19 years ago and the couple decided to move to his hometown of Beypınar village in Kırklareli province in western Turkey following the August 17, 1999 earthquake.

After moving to the village, Özdin wanted to contribute to the household budget and had the idea to raise geese, but she did not have enough capital to begin her project until she discovered the Women's Entrepreneurship in Agriculture initiative, which offers up to 30,000 Turkish lira towards women's agricultural projects. She submitted her "'Kazı Kazan" project (a pun which literally means 'scratch and win the goose') and the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock selected her idea as the winner in 2015.Now Özdin contributes to her family earnings and the village economy by raising some 350 geese every year.

She told Anadolu Agency, that when she first moved to the village she was faced with beliefs like, "If you are born in Istanbul, you cannot survive in the village," but she never herself be discouraged by the warnings.Özdin explained that she is very happy living in the village and that her dream began with only three geese."I raise 350 geese a year, and I prepare them in all forms of meals for local and foreign tourists coming to the village. At the moment there is incredible potential for customers," she said, adding that she hoped to increase production capacity in the next year to help fulfill orders coming from Bulgaria, Kırklareli and Istanbul.

"I was born and raised in Istanbul. I came to the village 18 years ago and everyone envies me now; it was easy for me to come from the city and adjust to village life. Now I make village bread, grow tomatoes and peppers in my garden, and of course raise my geese," she added.

Emphasizing that she is happy to be contributing to the family budget, Özdin said that she hopes to be a role model both for her children and for the women in the region.
