Moscow may let 6 Turkish firms supply vegetables

Moscow may allow six Turkish companies to supply vegetables to Russia, RIA news agency cited the head of Russian agriculture watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor, Sergei Dankvert, as saying Thursday.

Dankvert's statement follows checks of Turkish agricultural producers conducted by his agency between May 14 and 19. He said Rosselkhoznadzor had inspected 18 companies producing lettuce, zucchinis, pepper and Chinese lettuce.

Dankvert made no mention of resuming imports of tomatoes from Turkey.

Turkey denies restricting Russian agricultural imports

Turkey's Economy Ministry denied media-based allegations Wednesday that the country had imposed restrictions on Russian agricultural imports.

"The news stories in question do not reflect the truth," a statement said, adding, "Turkey is sticking to the signed agreement," referring to Monday's signed declaration between Turkey and Russia removing the restrictions on bilateral trade established after the downing of a Russian military jet in 2015.

The declaration was signed in Istanbul by Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Şimşek and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich with the aim of normalizing and developing both economies and to enhance the current trade volume between Russia and Turkey.

Moscow took several measures against Ankara, including a ban on Turkish agricultural imports and ending visa-free travel for Turks, after Turkey shot down a Russian military jet over an airspace violation in November 2015.

Since last summer, Russia has relaxed the measures and lifted its bans on some products, particularly citrus fruits.

Earlier on Wednesday, Russian newspaper Vedomosti cited sources saying Turkey had slapped new restrictions on Russian grain exporters. According to the newspaper, currently Russia might account for only 20-25 percent of the licenses for duty-free import of grain into the country.

Furthermore, according to the TASS's report, grain exports to Turkey are operating as usual. Russia's phytosanitary watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor did not receive any requests for revoking export certificates, the agency's official representative Yulia Melano told TASS.
