Turkey is united in its efforts to heal the wounds caused by the coup attempt on the night of July 15. The nation as a whole is trying to recover from the trauma caused by the bloodthirsty followers of Fethullah Gülen, who is sheltered and protected in his expansive compound in Pennsylvania, U.S. However, senior American officials, including military officers, cannot hide their disappointment over the failure of the coup attempt by the Gülenist Terror Organization (FETÖ), or silence their frustration over Turkey's success in diverting the danger of succumbing to instability and transforming into a failed state.The sonic boom of fighter jets flying low over Ankara and Istanbul's skies continue to ring in the ears of children. People of all ages and political persuasions, from the supporters of the government to its most die-hard opponents, are holding nightly democracy vigils across the country. Turkey is united in its condemnation of the coup attempt. The nation no longer wants the democratic process to be halted due to military coups. When democracy is menaced, daily political squabbling is pushed to the background and everyone across Turkey is united in a brotherhood of freedom in defense of what they hold dear. The leaders of the two main opposition parties, together with Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, visited President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who thanked them for their support for democracy on July 15. Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) held a rally in the central Taksim Square in Istanbul. Yesterday, Yıldırım met with CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairman Devlet Bahçeli. Erdoğan withdrew all the legal complaints he filed against his detractors. Solidarity, peace and unity are the norm in today's politics. Turkey has emerged stronger from FETÖ's coup attempt. This unity in Turkish politics, which has never been as stable and cooperative as before, gives hope for a better future in Turkey.At a time like this, irresponsible American officers' efforts to portray Turkey as an unstable, self-doubting failed state are nothing but wishful thinking on their part. If they are totally oblivious about what is truly happening, we would be glad to invite them to our country so that they can observe first-hand how a strong, self-assured, democracy-loving people handle threats to their democracy and freedoms.
