Sunday, Aug. 7, 2016, was a historic date for Turkey and will be written in the almanacs of the Republic. Millions of Turkish citizens, the president, prime minister, leaders of political parties, parliament speaker and deputies, top generals, senior judges, members of nongovernmental organizations, artists and athletes were all at Yenikapı Square. This rally with the highest number of participants was the most politically inclusive one in the Republic's history. Its main objective was to project the image of a nation united to its core. Three parties in Parliament, with 490 seats out of 550, and representing the overwhelming majority of the country, accepted President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's invitation to attend. This unity of purpose is also a first in Turkish politics. Political parties representing polar opposites uniting to defend democracy has a very important symbolic meaning.Mainstream political parties gathered together to demonstrate that no matter how separate their ideologies are, when confronted with extra-political attempts to redesign Turkey, they will unite to fight for people's rights and freedoms.Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, who has a history of antagonism toward the president, attending yesterday's rally was of momentous importance and sent a strong message to the world. It showed his determination to ensure that politics in Turkey is bound by the limits of democracy. His stance also showed that Turkey as a nation unites in grief and joy, no matter our differences.We sincerely hope that the media in the U.S. and EU belatedly realize what is truly happening in Turkey and cover Sunday's incredible rally in Yenikapı from their front pages. When we arrive at work this morning, we hope to admit that they finally put an end to their biased reporting and make a fair and impartial assessment of what happened at Yenikapı. They should just ask themselves whether there was ever an occasion when their representatives truly united as one in response to such a calamity. If they find such an occasion, it means they are finally on the road to understanding what the Turkish public has been going through since July 15.If they continue their biased reporting and ignore what happened yesterday, it means they are blinded by their hate of Erdoğan and Turkey to an extent of ignoring the inspiring determination demonstrated by the Turkish people in defense of their democracy and appeasing the Gülenist Terror Organization (FETÖ).Let no one doubt that the Turkish public's reaction to media organs and allied countries that abandon all decency and objectivity in their hate will be severe and no one should expect forgiveness for such a sin.
