Eurasian century beckons

The ancient modern Silk Road between China and Europe will be revived, spreading prosperity and security along the way. This was the message sent at the weekend's One Belt, One Road summit held in China's capital Beijing.President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's attendance demonstrates the importance Turkey attaches to this project. Turkey sees this modern day Silk Road as a perfect way to connect all the regions along the way to the global economy and establish stable partnerships to fight all factors, including international terrorism, that harm stability. Erdoğan's description of this new initiative as a potential factor in eliminating terrorism was no slip of the tongue. As prosperity and stability spreads, previously volatile regions will become sources of wealth. One thing is for sure: This project goes beyond narrow commercial concerns and aims at a comprehensive alteration of the current decrepit international structure, placing the countries along the belt at the center of the new world order. As U.S. and Europe fall behind in their contribution to the global economy, it is the emerging powers from Russia to Turkey, China to Iran, that will become the growth engines of the world. The revival of the Silk Road will pave the way for formerly peripheral Asian countries with great potential to become central players, participating and contributing to mutual prosperity. The One Belt, One Road initiative, if it gains momentum and produces concrete results, is likely to offer a "win-win" proposition for all participants and transform the entire region in to the political and commercial center of the world. All the countries along the belt need to take part in this initiative. The summit over the weekend showed all participants were determined to make it a success. This initiative has the strength to open up all societies, bring people from diverse cultural backgrounds together for mutual advantage. It should be noted that such unity will foster a vision of common purpose. At a time when multi-national groupings such as the U.N. and EU are falling victim to their internal contradictions, a Eurasia-wide commercial, cultural, political initiative is just what the world needs and Turkey needs to mobilize all its resources to ensure that One Belt, One Road is an unadulterated success. This initiative once again highlights Turkey's geo-strategic importance and emphasizes the worth of the huge infrastructure projects undertaken over the past several years. It is about time we rid ourselves of the uni-polar or bi-polar world narratives through a real program of cooperation and partnership through an untold number of bilateral and multilateral connections rather then divide the world between two opposites. The One Belt, One Road initiative is tantamount to a new world compact for universal values, prosperity and stability. And this compact is in perfect sync with Turkey's vision of progress and modernity.Turkey, with China, should and will be at the forefront of the One Belt, One Road initiative.
