ANKARA — Turkey has signed an agreement to participate in the "2014-2020 Erasmus + programme" - a European Union education project - according to the Turkish Ministry for EU Affairs.The ministry said in a statement on Monday that the program would provide Turkey with approximately €125 million (US$171 million) a year - about €900 million (US$1.23 billion) over a seven-year period.Turkish Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, said the program, also known as the European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students, aimed to send 70,000 Turkish citizens to Europe.Çavuşoğlu said that the program would offer citizens education, training, youth and sport and that interest had been high in the first application periods.Erasmus + aims to boost skills and employability, as well as modernize education, training and youth work.The program, which will run from 2014 to 2020, will have a budget of €14.7 billion (US$20 billion) and will provide opportunities for more than four million Europeans to study, train, gain work experience and volunteer abroad, according to program officials.The program is open to 33 countries from European Union member states, EU candidate countries and European Free Trade Association and European Economic Area members.
