School libraries offering students unlimited access
As part of the National Education Ministry's (MEB) FATİH Project, the enriched libraries (Z-Libraries), which are currently being installed in schools, will be equipped with interactive blackboards and Internet technologies in order to propel state schools onto digital platforms. When the project is initiated, students across Turkey will be able to study in groups, conduct research and follow both national and international publications at their school libraries. Recently, the protocol concerning infrastructure construction of the interactive blackboards and the Internet in Z-Libraries was signed between two MEB affiliates, the Directorate General of Support Services and the Directorate General for Innovation and Education Technologies.
According to the protocol, Z-Libraries, whose fiber optic Internet infrastructure was completed by the FATİH Project, interactive blackboards will be installed that will also serve as computers. Students will be able to study and read books as a group via the interactive blackboards as well as in the Z-Libraries. Teachers and students will also be able to access many international publications that they do not have in their libraries.
The MEB initiated the Z-Libraries project in 2011 and intends to turn state schools into life-long learning centers for students and adults via these libraries. It also aims to make them "living safe zones" where students as well as adults can relax and entertain themselves. These libraries will allow students to acquire information, envision and improve their creativity. Z-Libraries have several different features compared to traditional libraries. They offer modern notions of librarianship with their physical conditions and technological infrastructure. They are also equipped in a way that improves the quality of library services. They contain comfortable sitting areas, asymmetrical library areas and digital resources, such as computers and printers. With this project, 269 school libraries were developed in 49 cities, and the MEB aims to establish 300 more Z-libraries around Turkey throughout 2015.
