With little over a month left until the June 7 general elections, Turkey's political parties have begun to announce their electoral manifestos, including the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP). MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli finally declared the party's manifesto on Sunday in Ankara. With the halting of the reconciliation process topping the agenda of the nationalist party, Bahçeli has also pledged to vote against the presidential system in the ballots. While government officials have continuously stressed the necessity of switching to a presidential system to ensure political stability, Bahçeli has stated that the parliamentary system is a must in order to maintain political democracy.During the MHP's electoral manifesto meeting, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) has been criticized for holding peace talks with the imprisoned PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan in efforts to successfully finalize the reconciliation process. In this regard, the MHP has affirmed its pledge to end the peace talks immediately with aims "to not negotiate but combat with terror." In the reconciliation process, which was initiated by the AK Party government, large numbers of PKK members have turned themselves into authorities in the region. The process has also put an end to violence through a series of democratic reforms and economic investments to boost stability in the region.The electoral manifesto of the MHP is compiled under four major points that include economy and social policies, corruption, security and combatting terrorism and foreign policy. The declaration by the MHP also emphasizes what has previously been mentioned by the AK Party government, the necessity of establishing a new constitution. The MHP's manifesto says, "a new constitution that secures basic rights and freedoms of the citizens," continuing with a promise to prevent the recognition of any language other than Turkish, such as Kurdish, in an aim to protect Turkey's unity.The foreign policy item on the MHP's electoral manifesto has been prepared within a framework that is solely based on Turkey and Turkic nations. The nationalist party of Turkey promises to predicate a vice-versa policy on the current government's Northern Cyprus policies. Government officials have kept a solid stance on the Northern Cyprus issues, with Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu urging both the north and the south of the island to come to the table for negotiations over reunifying the island during his official visit in late September 2014. The MHP's manifesto underlines a Cyprus policy that states, "A two region-, two nation-, and two government-based policy will be established under the Cyprus policy of Turkey."
