MHP’s prominent economy figure unaware of party's election promises

Former governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) and deputy candidate of the opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), Durmuş Yılmaz, said he does not know about his party's election promises on Sunday. Prior to the MHP's election manifesto meeting on Sunday, Yılmaz said on live TV on the same day: "I must admit that I received the election manifesto today at 11:15 a.m. I then read it quickly and took some notes; there is no need to work on it. I did not participate in the meeting during the preparation of the election manifesto."Yılmaz became an MHP deputy candidate from Uşak province and has been presented as a leading figure who is supposed to be behind the party's economic policies. However, his remarks regarding his lack of knowledge about the MHP's election promises on economy raises question about the reliability of the MHP's promises in this regard.Meanwhile, the MHP's election manifesto was full of populist promises devoid of economic rationality or realism. In line with the other opposition parties, the MHP also promised to increase the minimum wage to TL 1,400 ($518) – which is currently at TL 949 – decreasing diesel prices used in agriculture to TL 1.75 and increase employment by 4.5 million people to 29.1 million, which currently stands at 25.4 million as of January 2015 data.
