Turkey: Opposition rallies gather thousands in Istanbul, Izmir

As around 2 million people gathered for the mass ceremony in Yenikapı district of Istanbul to mark the 562nd anniversary of the Ottoman Empire's conquest of Istanbul, many other Turkish citizens also gathered in the rallies of the opposition parties, the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) on Saturday.A few kilometers away from Yenikapı where Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu of the ruling AK Party and Parliamentary Speaker Cemil Çiçek attended "the biggest ever celebration in modern Turkey's history, Selahattin Demirtaş, the chairman of the HDP, spoke at his party's rally in Kazlıçeşme Square on the same day. Before Demirtaş, Group Deputy Chairman Pervin Buldan, the HDP Istanbul deputy Levent Tüzel, Diyarbakır deputy Altan Tan and Gaziantep deputy candidate Celal Doğan also gave speeches.Kazlıçeşme hosted a big crowd with many people coming from different districts of Istanbul. Demirtaş said they are confident that the HDP will exceed the ten percent threshold and enliven the Turkish parliament.On the other hand, the CHP chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu was in the western province of Izmir, which is considered the fortress of the CHP due to strong election results over the last decade. Before his arrival, a barcovision presentation was screened , showing the CHP's deputies addressing to public.Kılıçdaroğlu also addressed to thousands gathered in Izmir's Gündoğdu Square, repeating his election promise that the minimum wage will be 1,500 Turkish Liras while keeping his earlier election rhetoric pretty much based on economy. Selin Sayek Böke, CHP's Deputy Chairman in charge of economy policies and a first place candidate from Izmir's first electoral district, was a prominent figure of the rally.
