Following the recent general elections, the uncertainty of the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) passing the election threshold has been wiped away as the results indicate great support for the party in Istanbul.

The HDP, which has continuously claimed to be a party for all of Turkey, attained success in the elections with votes not only from the southeast, but also especially from Istanbul. HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş ran as a candidate in the 2014 presidential election and received nearly 10 percent of the vote, the majority coming from Istanbul, followed by İzmir and Ankara. In this regard, the recent general election results clearly display strong support for Demirtaş's HDP, with the HDP gaining more than 1 million votes in Istanbul to send 11 deputies to Parliament. In addition, the HDP has surpassed the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) to become the third leading party in Istanbul. According to official results from last year's presidential election, Demirtaş received nearly 4 million votes throughout Turkey. The unofficial results from Sunday's elections show that the HDP gained nearly 6 million votes throughout Turkey. The results indicate an increase in the HDP's votes by nearly 2 million in less than a year.
