CHP starts considering AK Party option for coalition
Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has given a green light for allying with the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) to form a government after the chairman of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), Devlet Bahçeli dashed his hopes of a coalition bloc that included the CHP, MHP and the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP). Kılıçdaroğlu, who said he preferred the partnership of the trio to form a government, had to give up after Bahçeli reiterated he would not be part of a plan that involves the HDP.
Kılıçdaroğlu has convened the mayors from his party to discuss possible coalition options that the CHP can lean toward and held a five-hour meeting on Thursday. Pointing out that the voters asked the parties to "come to terms" in the polls, Kılıçdaroğlu said that the CHP is determined to hold the "historical responsibility" given to them by the citizens.
The CHP reportedly will not act in prejudice toward any party and Kılıçdaroğlu said he preferred a government formed by the opposition parties in the first place.
"However this does not seem easy," Kılıçdaroğlu said, "The MHP's stance against the HDP is apparent. And the options left are obvious. We'll try them all."
Fourty-four mayors attended the meeting where they delivered their opinions on the options. The majority of the mayors demanded a coalition of the HDP, CHP and MHP. They also suggested a minority government with the CHP and the MHP backed by the HDP, and if that fails, they asked for insisting a CHP minority government.
Some of the mayors said that the MHP is "irreconcilable" and thereby a coalition with the AK Party should also be on the table.
Kılıçdaroğlu gave a press conference on Monday where he outlined the CHP's position and points necessary to form a coalition. "The duty to form a coalition rests on the 60 percent – the opposition bloc," Kılıçdaroğlu had said.
Bahçeli's response to the proposal, which Kılıçdaroğlu deems the best way of government, has been negative. He said on Wednesday that the 60 percent bloc promoted by Kılıçdaroğlu is empty talk.
"If the government is going to be formed based on the total percentage of votes, then there is no need for principles, ethics or dignity," Bahçeli said.
Bahçeli also said that the MHP will not be included in a coalition government with the HDP.
He underscored that the CHP should not waste its time trying to persuade the MHP to form a coalition government with the HDP, and said that doing so would do Turkey wrong.
