The National Security Council (MGK) has convened on Wednesday in efforts to discuss critical matters mainly focusing on establishing enhanced security measures in the upcoming Nov. 1 early elections. As reports from the country's security and intelligence services will be presented to the council to be assessed, the PKK's weapon stores in northern Iraq's Qandil Mountains and surrounding areas are to be wiped out with a comprehensive plan that is to be established following the MGK meeting. The government has paused the reconciliation process due to the outlawed PKK's increased terror activities that have killed dozens of security officials throughout the country since the terrorist organization broke the cease-fire in July. In response to the violent attacks, Ankara has carried out airstrikes on PKK hideouts and reportedly killed 943 militants, with more than 850 having been reportedly injured.The MGK meeting is not only critical due to the topics of discussion, but it will also be the first meeting after the shelving of the reconciliation process, as President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said. Sources in Ankara have indicated that establishing a new roadmap for combating the PKK as well as re-evaluating security measures are to be discussed at the meeting.Under the framework of re-evaluating and enhancing security measures, the MGK meeting will decide on extensive security for early elections on Nov. 1. In regard to election security, Erdoğan on Sunday also assured that the government would ensure a high level of election security.During the process leading to the June 7 elections, the PKK reportedly sent letters to locals in eastern provinces threatening them not to vote for the Justice and Development Party (AK Party). In addition, a Facebook photo shared by an individual on Sunday, June 7 allegedly revealed how a pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) voter cheated while casting his ballot despite the security measures taken on election day. The photo shows a man whose name reportedly is Ömer Mutlu, inserting numerous ballots, all of which were cast for the HDP, into the ballot box.In addition to election security and combating the PKK, the MGK will also discuss further operations that are planned against Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS). Last Friday, Turkish jets carried out their first airstrikes as part of the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS in Syria.Along with combating ISIS, the MGK will also evaluate up-to-date information on the operations against the "parallel structure," which refers to the Gülen Movement. The Gülen Movement is a transnational movement led by the U.S.-based imam Fethullah Gülen. It is accused of wiretapping thousands of people including government officials and encrypted phones in efforts to allegedly overthrow the democratically elected government. In this regard, the Financial Crimes Unit on Tuesday launched an operation on 23 companies linked with the Koza İpek Group, which is allegedly affiliated with the Gülen Movement, on suspicion of financing terrorism.As Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu announced on Monday the task allocations for deputy prime ministers in the caretaker government in a statement published on the Official Gazette, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Deputy Prime Minister Tuğrul Türkeş will be responsible for the Council of State, the coordination of Cyprus alliance of civilizations project in the 63rd government and will be responsible for the National Security Council while closely following the decisions taken at the council's meetings.
