Survey shows AK Party close to forming single-party government
A recent survey conducted by Konsensus Research Company revealed on Monday if elections took place this Sunday, 43.3 percent of voters would vote for the Justice and Development Party (AK Party).
The survey involved 1,500 people from 81 provinces between Sept. 5 and Sept. 13. Of the total participants, 27.6 percent said they will vote for the Republican People's Party (CHP), 13.8 percent for the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and 12.6 percent for the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP).
Chairman of Konsensus Murat Sarı said the AK Party's hypothetical voter share corresponds to around 270 seats in the Parliament, which means only six seats would be needed to provide the majority needed to form a single-party government.
"AK Party needs six deputies. The party, which took 49.8 percent in 2011, can accomplish this again. It can regain the votes from eastern and southeastern provinces. It needs to go door to door and talk about the economy," he said, adding the candidate list proves that the party corrected its mistakes in the June 7 general elections.
In the candidate list, return of veteran figures that were off the list for the June 7 elections was witnessed, following the removal of three-term rule in the party's code.
Former parliament speaker Cemil Çiçek and former deputy prime minister in charge of the economy, Ali Babacan, were nominated from Ankara.
Known for his role in initiating and managing the reconciliation process, former interior minister and party spokesperson Beşir Atalay was nominated from the eastern Van province. Former food and agriculture minister Mehdi Eker, another AK Party veteran of Kurdish background, was nominated from Istanbul.Former labor minister Faruk Çelik was nominated from the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa. Renowned Kurdish politician who was off the list for the June 7 elections, Galip Ensarioğlu, was nominated from Diyarbakır.
Recep Akdağ, former health minister, was nominated from the eastern province of Erzurum.
Binali Yıldırım, former transportation minister and adviser to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, was nominated from İzmir where he ran for mayor in 2014.
