OECD, TÜİK reports reveal the AK Party most genuine in fulfilling promises

New findings from Ankara-based Atılım University's Undergraduate Research Project suggest that the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) has been the most reliable party in recent Turkish history, upholding the highest percentage of its election promises among all Turkish governments since 1980's military coup. The findings are based on data and resources collected from international organizations such as the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Developments (OECD) and Human Rights Watch (HRW) as well as domestic sources including the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat). The Motherland Party (ANAP) government, which ruled between 1983 and 1991, fulfilled 46.5 percent of its promises, while the AK Party government fulfilled 55.6 percent of the promises it made between 2002 and 2011.

The research looks at 420 pledges made in different areas and asks whether they were fulfilled by all the governments, both coalition and single-party, between 1983 and 2012. The results indicate that while ANAP fulfilled 46.5 percent of all its pledges during its single-party rule, the party partially met 11.6 percent of its promises. During the several coalition governments that ANAP oversaw between 1991 and 2002, it fulfilled 28.8 percent of its election pledges.

The research further revealed that in contrast to ANAP, the AK Party has met 55.6 percent of all its election promises while 14.6 percent are defined as partially met while projects from 2011 are still being completed. However, nearly 30 percent of the promises made since 2012 were successfully met by the AK Party government. These figures lead some to believe that no government should be formed without the AK Party.
