The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) on Saturday launched its official campaign for the April 16 referendum with a massive organization in Ankara Arena stadium that is expected to gather more than 40,000 party supporters across Turkey.According to information obtained from AK Party sources, the party's referendum slogans, video advertisements and new campaign songs will be announced to the public at the event. Sources indicated that to attract different segments of society, campaign songs and slogans have been prepared in different languages, such as Turkish, Kurdish and Arabic. During the event, thousands of booklets and different types of brochures that explain the benefit of the presidential system will also be distributed by AK Party officials. AK Party sources stated that the campaign would have two legs.Accordingly in the first leg, the theme "yes" will be conveyed through posters, slogans and campaign music, while the planned constitutional changes will be explained thoroughly. It will also be emphasized that a "yes" vote is a positive step toward "stability" and "development." In the second leg, AK Party officials are expected to explain the damage that may be caused by a "no" vote, while avoiding negative language from naysayers. Moreover, AK Party provincial organizations are preparing a comprehensive campaign to provide further understanding of the constitutional amendment proposal to the public, providing them with insight into the presidential system. As part of this campaign, the AK Party is expected to visit all provinces and cities, including provincial districts, to provide an understanding of the advantages of the future system. In addition, AK Party officials indicated that they would carry out a positive campaign. AK Party Deputy Chairman Cevdet Yılmaz said that throughout the campaign process the party would clarify the constitutional changes with four main themes: Abolishing tutelage, development and prosperity, unity and solidarity and a stronger Turkey in the international arena. "This not an election, and a referendum is not a competition between political parties. Thus, we are targeting voters from the whole political spectrum," Yılmaz said on Feb. 20, adding: "We will carry out a positive campaign where we will focus on persuading undecided voters and opposing citizens. We believe that our nation will put forward a strong statement by saying 'yes,'" he added.AK Party Chairman and Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım also indicated that his party would adopt an "embracing" mood in the referendum campaign. On Feb. 22, Yıldıırm said his party has always aimed at "embracing all people" in the country. He added that the electorate was free to vote for or against the constitutional changes. "We do not have a say in how they vote. If we did, there would have been no need to hold a referendum."
