MHP leader rejects claims that he has eye on VP seat
Turkey's opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairman Devlet Bahçeli has denied allegations claiming that he will become the vice president of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan if the constitutional amendment package, that will lead the country to a switch to a presidential system, is accepted by the public in the upcoming April 16 referendum.
Along with the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), the opposition MHP is also supporting the constitutional amendment package.
Several politicians that are against the amendment package claimed that MHP leader has been in favor of the constitutional package in exchange for the vice presidency seat.
However, Bahçeli denied the allegations and stressed that he has no ambitions for the position.
"Devlet Bahçeli is the leader of a political party that has 48 years of tradition and customs. It would not be appropriate to give the vice presidency position to someone who is the leader of this political organization," Bahçeli had said on March 20.
When asked if anybody in the MHP would consider the vice presidency's seat, Bahçeli stressed that they "have no such a plan."
