Republican People's Party (CHP) Yalova Deputy Muharrem İnce said on Thursday that the person who cut down a "no" banner in Yalova should be hanged.

Addressing citizens in the province, İnce said that he gave orders to hang the person who allegedly cut off a "no" banner.

"They will be on patrol tonight. Whoever has been cutting down [the banners], we will find them. Don't worry," he added.

İnce's controversial statement comes days after CHP Deputy Hüsnü Bozkurt threatened those in favor of the constitutional amendment, saying: "No one should get carried away if the referendum results in a ‘yes' win. We will once again hunt you down starting from Samsun, all the way to İzmir [referring to Turkey's War of Independence against European powers]."

Referring to "yes" voters as enemies of Turkey, CHP Deputy Bozkurt's remarks drew strong criticism from the government and "yes" voters, while the chief public prosecutor in Ankara launched an investigation into Bozkurt's controversial remarks.

Former CHP Chairman and current Antalya Deputy Deniz Baykal also made an astonishing remark.

Baykal said they would celebrate April 16 as if it were Turkey winning its War of Independence in the case of a "no" vote majority.

He threatened citizens that support the constitutional amendment and said, "We will drown your entire generation in the sea of İzmir."
