Turkey's Supreme Election Board announced the official referendum results on Thursday, confirming a victory for the 'Yes' camp with 51,41 percent.

The 'No' camp received 48,59 percent of the votes, and voter turnout stood at 87,45 percent, the board said.

The first elections in the new system will be held in 2019. After the 2019 elections, the post of prime minister will be abolished.With the referendum, the Turkish people approved amendments to 18 articles of the country's existing Constitution, including the transition from a parliamentary government system to a presidential system.The reforms will hand executive powers to the president and will allow him/her to maintain political party membership. Likewise, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is now expected to rejoin the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party).
