Candidates will not be able to run for presidency, Parliament at the same time

The efforts to change laws in accordance with the new system of governance were discussed in detail in a recent meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his fellow party authorities. They discussed the idea that candidates should not campaign in both presidential and Parliament races.

Justice and Development Party (AK Party) officials asserted that "as the legislative and executive branches are separate, candidacy for both offices is not acceptable," and added that "the election of the president and 600 deputies will be at the same time, if a person applies for [candidacy for] both posts of president and deputy and is elected president, it would mean that there would be 599 deputies not 600." AK Party officials said that the right thing is to run for either one or the other.

In the meeting last Friday, it was determined that elections will be held after 45 days in a case in which the presidency is vacant. It was also agreed to that until a new president is elected, the oldest vice president would substitute for the president.

Regulations for closure cases against political parties were also planned during the meeting. To completely end closure cases against political parties, regulations alone in the law of political parties are not enough. As a constitutional change is required for that, the AK Party will present a proposal for constitutional change to the opposition parties, the Republican People's Party (CHP) and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

In the adjustment laws meeting, AK Party officials did not rule out the formula for election alliances that MHP chairman Bahçeli suggested before. Accordingly, there would be one list and common counting. AK Party officials said that it would be better that the names of the parties that forge an alliance be on ballots and that the alliances go into elections openly. The AK Party also suggests that forging an alliance should be restricted to three parties.

to the current electoral system is that the country be divided into 600 polling districts. Each district would vote for a deputy in the type of system that exists.
