Natural gas imports up 8.82 percent in 2014


Turkey's natural gas imports saw an increase of 8.82 percent in 2014 compared to the previous year. The Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) announced the natural gas market sector report of 2014. According to the report, 49.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas were imported in the past year. The largest importing country was Russia with 26.9 billion cubic meters, corresponding to 54.7 percent of all imports. Iran and Azerbaijan followed Russia, importing 8.9 billion and 6 billion cubic meters of natural gas respectively. Turkey's 7.2 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports in 2014 constitutes 14.78 percent of all natural gas imports for the year. Of LNG imports, 76.79 percent were bought by state-owned energy company BOTAŞ from Algeria and Nigeria, while the rest was imported on a spot basis. Meanwhile, natural gas production declined by 10.8 percent to 479 million cubic meters. Tekirdağ led all provinces with 279 million cubic meters produced, followed by Kırklareli with 71 million cubic meters. Among the companies with importing licenses, BOTAŞ was the only active company in 2013, importing 632 million cubic meters of natural gas from Greece. Turkey's natural gas storage capacity remained the same throughout last year.
