WEC: Turkey strengthened position in energy

Christoph Frei, the secretary-general of World Energy Council, said Turkey played a key role in relations with the natural gas producer countries, suggesting that Turkey strengthened its position in the field of energy.

Frei recalled that Turkey served as a bridge between the East and the West and said the country was located in a very important geography, in terms of natural gas and oil transition, thanks to the Bosporus straits.

Frei noted that Turkey strengthened its position in the field of energy within its own region and added that Turkey has developed significantly by improving its infrastructure and would play a key role in relations with current and newcomer gas countries in the market, including Iran, Russia as well as Europe as the most important consumer. This indicates how special the relations with these countries are with regards to the corporate strategy which will be formed in the new period, according to Frei.

Regarding the issues to be discussed in the 23rd World Energy Congress, Frei said the congress theme "Embracing New Frontiers" was suggestive of the serious changes and transitions in the field of energy.

Defining the congress's date as "a critical period," Frei pointed out that the world was going through a period when markets, policies, risks and geopolitical developments regarding energy supply and demand centers have globally changed.

He said all these fields could be seen as "new frontiers" in energy. "This congress is being held in a period when we witness all these changes. We need to connect certain points between these changes for the future of the sustainable energy," Frei said.

Energy and economy ministers and high-level executives of energy companies from nearly 50 countries will attend the 23rd World Energy Congress, which will be held in Istanbul between Oct. 9 -13. Depicted as the most comprehensive energy event in the world, the congress will be hosted by Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım and Energy and Natural Resources Minister Berat Albayrak in Istanbul Congress Center under the aegis of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
