Construction of TurkStream to start in summer
Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom has recently announced that the pipeline construction of the TurkStream project, in particular for the section of the project that will pass through the sea, is scheduled to begin this summer.
According to a statement released by the company, the pipeline construction of the sub-sea section of the TurkStream project will commence in summer this year, and in accordance with the timetable, the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.
The TurkStream project is designed to transfer Russian natural gas to Europe via the Black Sea and Turkey. Under Gazprom's plans, the TurkStream pipeline will be split into four lines with a total annual capacity of 63 billion cubic meters. In December 2014, Russia scrapped the South Stream pipeline project that would have transported natural gas to Europe via Bulgaria and brought forward the proposed four-line and 63-billion-cubic-meter project that will bypass Ukraine and stretch to the Turkish-Greek border through the Black Sea.
Two separate agreements were signed between Gazprom and the Swiss Allseas company for the construction of the two lines within the framework of the said project.
Gazprom Chairman Alexey Miller said the "South Stream Transport" company opened an office in Istanbul in order to ensure effective coordination with Turkey regarding the TurkStream project.
