Mustafa Yılmaz, chair of the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA), said that 49.3 percent of Turkey's energy production was obtained from domestic and renewable energy sources last year.

The EMRA head said that the government has been carrying out important projects in domestic and renewable energy. Noting that they are working towards this goal as the regulatory authority of the sector, Yılmaz stated that they are in constant contact with investors at this point.

"I can say that we are breaking new ground in domestic and renewable energy. Last year, we obtained 49.3 percent of Turkey's energy production, about half of it from domestic and renewable energy sources. These numbers are very important to us," Yılmaz said, recalling that serious distance has been covered regarding the domestic and renewable energy, particularly over the last couple of years.

He said the point Turkey has currently reached was not enough, stressing that they aim to reach a better place altogether in a short period of time.

Meanwhile, Yılmaz also recalled that a significant part of the current account deficit in the country has originated from energy imports.

"The more we activate our domestic and renewable resources within our energy sector, the more we contribute to the closure of the deficit and the country's budget. The activation of our own resources in this sense contributes to the current account deficit, in fact it contributes to employment as well," he said.

"We need to focus on this area in order to reduce unemployment," he continued, adding that they attach importance to increasing domestic production of renewable energy on the one hand, while also trying to develop renewable energy on the other.
