Disposable plastics will not be further used on the premises of British royalty, Buckingham Palace announced Monday.

Plastic bottles and straws will be replaced by biodegradable packaging to reduce the impact of waste on the environment, a palace spokesman said. Plastic straws in the cafes of the royal residences and in the employee canteens are also being phased out.

The royals and their guests, however, may not notice a big change as water is already served only from glass bottles. From now on catering for royal staff will use only porcelains and glasses.

In addition, a "green newsletter" will regularly inform royal employees about environmental innovations, such as ways to reduce waste and energy consumption.
