Presidential Spokesperson İbrahim Kalın warned the European Union regarding recent claims suggesting plans to pause Turkey's accession, saying that the bloc will have to accept consequences if it decides to halt the negotiations.

Kalın made the comments in live interview on A Haber channel, shortly after EU's top enlargement official, Johannes Hahn told Reuters in an interview that Ankara must reverse its post-coup crackdown or risk an end to accession talks."EU is mistaken if it thinks it can subdue Turkey with such a decision; it does not understand the social dynamics of Turkey or the region" Kalın said.

He criticized Europe for 'applying double standards' when it comes to Turkey.

He said that while European officials only bothered visit to Turkey almost a month after the failed July 15 coup attempt, they were very swift to respond when pro-PKK deputies of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) were detained as part of an ongoing terror probe.

"If they are trying to threaten Turkey with such decisions, they should know that there will be consequences" Kalın added.
