Italian lawmakers join European calls for recognition of Palestinian state

Italian lawmakers have been added to the list of European states backing up a non-binding resolution that supports their government's recognition of Palestine as a state, Reuters reported on Friday. Italy's Chamber of Deputies voted 300 to 45 in favor of the motion proposed by the Democractic Party, lead by the Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.Israel's illegal settlements on the occupied territories and their failure to follow the United Nation resolutions against the occupation have received criticism from European states. Despite the support from European states, the non-binding motion lacks the ability to enforce any political pressure on Israel, as most European countries suggest that a Palestinian state should emerge from negotatians with Israel.Currently, Sweeden officially recognizes Palestine as a state. Recently, France passed a similar non-binding motion in favor of Palestine, in addition to Ireland and the United Kingdom.Despite pressure from the international community, the Israeli government continues to build new illegal settlements on the occupied territories. Most recently, the Israeli government published a legal tender for a new settlement project that will add 430 new settlements in the occupied West Bank, Terrestrial Jerusalem, an Israeli non-governmental organization reported on January 30.
