Germany does not support the establishment of an independent Kurdish state, said the German Foreign Ministry's deputy spokesman, Sawsan Chebli on Wednesday, when asked by a journalist at the Federal Press Office where the German government stands regarding this issue. Chebli said, there is no change in the stance of the German government regarding this issue, and it is not in favor of an independent Kurdish state, since there is no need for the creation of new borders in the region. Redrawing borders in the region did not lead to positive results in the past, said Chebli, adding that such a step would not be "the best way to ensure peace in the region."The president of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, Masoud Barzani, said previously that his people will one day be independent, but through peace and after the ongoing war with ISIS militants comes to an end. The ISIS militants' advance in the region has boosted the strength of Kurds' Peshmerga militia, which has since then increased their hopes of creating an independent Kurdish state in the region. Turkey has many times reiterated that it opposes independence for a Kurdish state in northern Iraq and wants a unity government in Baghdad to counter the threat by ISIS militants who have seized large areas of territory in Iraq as well as Syria.
