German police carried out raids on apartments and other properties believed to belong to a member of the extremist group, Reichsbürger. Police officers in Bavaria and Rhineland-Palatinate searched 28 buildings and apartments resulting in the capture of a so-called "imperial citizen." An arrest warrant was filed against the man, the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior said, as reported by Zeit Online. More than 200 police officers were involved in the police investigation. Numerous pieces of evidence including data carriers and a series of forged documents including nationality cards and fake admission stamps were found during the raids.

German authorities have conducted an increasing number of raids targeting right-wing extremist groups in recent months. In January, police searched a dozen locations associated with a group accused of plotting to attack police officers, asylum seekers and Jews.

The extremist group, known as Reichsbürger, is considered a terrorist organization in Germany where its members procure arms and ammunition. Members of the movement do not recognize the modern German state or its laws and follow the ideology of the former German Reich. Members of the Reichsbürger group refuse to acknowledge the constitutional German state and do not pay any state taxes or fines, violating German law. They continue to follow the laws of the Third Reich and believe in the German borders of the 1930s. According to the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, around 10,000 people are part of the movement, 500 to 600 of whom are right-wing extremists.
