Experts on Tuesday successfully disposed of World War II bombs discovered during construction work in the German cities of Dusseldorf and Dortmund.

A bomb was discovered in Dusseldorf on Monday during construction work in the suburb of Derendorf.

According to the city council, some 2,300 people were affected, while a spokesman said on Tuesday that a further 4,400 were ordered to stay at home and not go outdoors until the all clear was given.

Some 80 residents of a care home had to be brought to other facilities as part of the evacuation and the operation interrupted train schedules due to temporary railway closures.

In Dortmund, a bomb was found during construction works on the site of the municipal energy supplier in the suburb of Dorstfeld.

Police officers checked houses within the exclusion zone on Tuesday to make sure no residents were still at home before work proceeded to dispose of the bomb.

Streets were cordoned off around the site and public transport was restricted during the operation.

At 10:30 pm (2030 GMT), the city of Dortmund tweeted that the bomb had been defused and thanked residents for their cooperation.
