A Danish-born man was Wednesday sentenced to a five-year prison term and stripped of his Danish citizenship for volunteering to fight for the Daesh terrorist group in Syria.

Anis Laraba was 18 when he in 2013 traveled to Syria and joined the terrorists, the district court in Glostrup, just west of the Danish capital of Copenhagen, said.

It concluded that "an aggravating circumstance" was that Laraba had stayed nine months in Syria and taken part in training and fought with Daesh. During the period, the group conducted public executions of religious minorities.

Since he also has Algerian citizenship, the court ruled that Laraba was to be deported after serving his sentence. It noted that Laraba had been studying in Medina, Saudi Arabia, at the time of his arrest.

The 22-year-old has maintained his innocence during the trial, news agency Ritzau reported. He appealed the ruling.

Laraba was in Syria with another Danish-born man who last month was stripped of his Danish citizenship by the Supreme Court.
