Spain's Ana Vela Rubio, the oldest person in Europe, died on Friday at the age of 116 in an elderly care home in Barcelona, Spanish media reported on Saturday.

Vela Rubio, born in Andalusia on October 29, 1901, was Europe's oldest resident and the third-oldest person in the world, according to the international Gerontology Research Group.

A former seamstress, Vela Rubio has lived in Spain's Catalonia region since the 1940s, according to newspaper El Pais. Her 90-year-old daughter lived with her in the same convelescent home for the past four months.

Italy's Emma Morano, the last living person born in the 19th Century, passed away in April. She held the title of the oldest person in the world in the Guinness World Records.

With the death of Vela Rubio, Europe's oldest person is another woman from the continent's Mediterranean region: Italy's Giuseppina Projetto, aged 115.
