Extraordinary instrument to mesmerize audience in Istanbul

With his unusual instrument - a hybrid of guitar, baritone-guitar, violoncello and drums, gifted with hammers, pedals and propellers at variable speeds - Italian guitarist Paolo Angeli is taking the stage at Akbank Sanat on Feb. 24. Angeli will mesmerize the audience with his unclassified music - a mix of jazz, folk and pop - along with his improvisations, original compositions and his unlimited energy at the concert where he will perform with his Sardinian prepared-guitar. Born in 1970, Angeli started playing guitar at the age of 9 and grew up in Palau, an encouraging musical environment. His encounter with renowned guitar player Giovanni Scanu in 1993 was a turning point in his life, from whom he learned the Gallurese and Logudorese guitar techniques of Sardinia. A graduate from DAMS Bologna with an ethnomusicology degree, Angeli has been collaborating with ISRE since 1997 in order to constitute the Mario Cervo Archive, the most important collection of Sardinian musical records and traditional music. Playing more than 50 live concerts a year in Europe, the United States, Canada, Russia and Brazil, Angeli has performed with formidable music figures including Pat Metheny, Fred Frith, Jon Rose, Enkhjargal Dandarvaanchig, Antonello Salis, Hamid Drake, Evan Parker, Ned Rothenberg and Takumi Fukushima.
