Swedish jazz pianist Bobo Stenson at Akbank Sanat

Depicted as the greatest jazz pianist alive and a first-class poet by music authorities, Swedish pianist Bobo Stenson will perform at Akbank Sanat on April 20. Stenson will perform pieces from his latest album "Indicum," which was recorded in 2011, and granted him the Manifest Prize for the third time. Collaborating with the giants of the jazz world who have visited Scandinavia since the 1960's, such as Red Mitchell, Dexter Gordon, Toots Thielemans, Sonny Rollins, Gary Burton and Sheila Jordan, Stenson went on an African tour with Stan Getz. His "Sart" album, recorded in 1971 with Jan Garbarek, became one of the first records of the famous label ECM. For the same label, he also recorded his album "Underwear" as a group leader along with Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen. Touring with famous trumpet player Don Cherry, Stenson was praised with his quartet consisting of Garbarek, Palle Danielsson, Christensen and himself. His world music projects throughout his long-lasting career include Rena Rama, where he combined jazz and African and Eastern European music, and Oriental Wind, which he founded with Okay Temiz, Ramamani, Bangalore and Mr. Mani from the Karnataka College of Percussion. In 1988, he joined the famous American saxophonist Charles Lloyd's band, and recorded five albums for ECM records. He has been playing with famous Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko since 1996 and released three albums for ECM with him as well. Granted the Swedish royal medal, Litteris et Artibus, in 2005 for his contributions to Swedish culture, Stenson won the "Musician of the Year" award at the European Jazz Awards a year later. When: April 20Where: Akbank Sanat
