The biggest of the Princes' Islands, Büyükada is hosting an exhibition featuring boats with silk sails, inspired by the stories of exiled people throughout history

The textile artist Gül Bolulu's "Exile Boats" exhibition, which she designed to tell stories of exile and planned as a show of respect to all that have been exiled from their homes, is on display at the Nikola Hangar quad of the Museum of Princes' Island. Designs which Bolulu has created from abandoned boats with sails made of Ödemiş silk are presented to the visitors in the exhibition.

Showing the despair, disappointments, fears and suffering of exiles in the exhibition, the textile artist who lives on Büyükada has made her dreams into reality. The primary materials are boats and sails, and every boat and sail will have different stories. Exiled people's pains will be commemorated with respect through old boats and special designs prepared with the famous Ödemiş silk.

The artist spoke about her project, saying: "In 2016, I used a little boat that is produced in 1942 in Ayvansaray and Ödemiş silk in my design that I made as a part of the 'Bezce' symposium that was held at the Marmara University's rectorate building. Starting from this, I prepared many designs with boats and sails. I dreamt more and more every day. While we were thinking about an exhibition place with my friends, we decided the Museum of Princes' Island would be proper. When the place was decided to be Büyükada, the idea of opening an exhibition here reminded me of being in exile, the sea, wind, humanity and history. I have heard many exile stories since I came here. This impressed me and my point of view upon the Princes' Islands. After Armenian Bishop Narses I, the first person who was exiled in the islands, the exile tradition has continued. The Princes' Islands were known as Papadonis, in memory of abbeys here during the Byzantine period. These abbeys became famous through emperors, empresses, and patricians that were exiled here and never saw Constantinople again. The story of 'Exile Boats' starts with those exile stories. These sails have carried the despair, darkness and maybe the fears of exiled people with them. I want to give a voice those exile stories with my dream sails in this exhibition."
