TedX Istanbul takes it to a new level: Dream!

At Zorlu Peforming Arts Center, this Saturday, April 1,TedX Istanbul will host a very special and inspirational event, with 12 speakers from a variety of professions coming together on stage to discuss the topic 'Dreams.'



Having and pursuing a "dream" is the focus of the newest TedX Istanbul talk to come to town this Saturday, on Apr.l 1. An independently organized TED event, which is the non-profit media organization which posts talks online for free distribution, under the slogan "ideas worth spreading", this next TedX Istanbul talk will certainly be the talk of the town.The abbreviation of "Technology, Entertainment and Design," TED events as well as their local and community-based TedX events focus on a wide variety of subjects ranging from technology and design as well as scientific, cultural and academic topics. This particular TedX Istanbul event, held at Zorlu Performing Arts Center, will be an especially unique opportunity to "unleash new ideas, inspire and inform" as the specially crafted Ted talks aim to do, as an impressive line-up of a dozen or so speakers from a wide variety of careers and professions will be joining each other onstage for two very special panels devoted solely to the concept of having a dream and pursuing it.This all-day event, which will start with doors opening at 1:30 p.m. followed by two sessions ending at 7:30 p.m., will have a dozen speakers from all sorts of different professions, speaking in a panel moderated by İzzet Memi and honing in on having a dream and pursuing it.Doğan KubanThe first session of two, which will take place between 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. is titled "Olmaz Boyle Şey," which is a tough term to translate because it can have so many different meanings. From "this can't be done!" to "this can't be real!" to "How can this be?" The interpretation is up to you, but the gist is somewhat the same. Speakers will be talking about having a dream and following it through hell and high waters.The following is a short description of just some of the very interesting line up of speakers for the day:Doğan Kuban "A Renaissance Man" is a Turkish architectural historian who was born in Paris in 1926. Receiving a Fulbright in 1962 after studying architecture at Istanbul Technical University, which took him to America to teach Islamic Arts and Architecture at Michigan University, Kuban then taught at M.I.T.'s famous Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture and in 1994 he was named an honorary foreign member of the American Institute of Architects. He is the author of numerous books published in Turkish and English such as Ottoman Architecture, Istanbul: An Urban History, Sinan: An Architectural Genius, Ottoman Palaces - Vanished Urban Visions and Ottoman's Istanbul: 112 Monuments Symbolizing the Ottoman Capital Istanbul to name just a few.In just her mid-thirties, Refika Birgül is also a prolific writer; however her expertise is in Turkish cuisine. She is the host of the cooking shows Mucize Lezzetler (Miracle Tastes) and Refika'dan Hızlı Tarifler (Quick Recipes from Refika) and has created her own line of products under the name Refika'dan. In 2010, Birgül published her first bilingual cookbook Refika'nın Mutfağı/Cooking New Istanbul Style, which is just one of many others published in Turkish and devoted to specialized Turkish culinary practices such as her books on bulgur, using a pressure cooker and cooking with pomegranate.At 40, Mehmet Turgut is Turkey's most famous portrait photographer who is known worldwide and follows maybe just Ara Güler in terms of being Turkey's all-time top photography artist. He is the founder of the photography and culture magazine "46" and has published his own photography book "30" and received multiple international and national awards for his work, which you may recall as some of his most familiar images are characteristic portraits of famous Turkish figures and personalities,İzzet MemiYou may also recall Ayşe Kurucu, aka "Gezgin Teyze" (Travelling Aunt) a 60-year-old lady who dons a headscarf and calls herself the "Independent Girl" and who was once not even allowed to step foot out of her doorstep because of her possessive husband, yet since divorcing him over the past decade has fulfilled her dream of travelling the globe having already visited 25 countries thus far.In the second session, which will be held between 5:15 p.m. and 7:30 p.m and is entitled "Bir Gün Bize Yetmez," which means "A Day is not Enough," just some of the entertaining line-up of speakers will be:Gamze Tutan, a volunteer educator who has made the news headlines for travelling to rural villages all over the country as a volunteer with the Habitat Foundation for a project realized by Türk Telekom entitled "İnternetle Hayat Kolay" (Life is Easy with the Internet) in which she teaches villager women of all ages how to become proficient on the computer.Miray Akovalıgil is an attorney-turned-improvisational comedian. Her character "İş Görüşmesine Giden Corporate Elis" (Corporate Elis on a Job Interview) is one of the most viewed character typecasts on social media.Tayfun Akın, is an entrepreneurial academic. An electronic engineer who has made it his mission to bring the MEMS (short for MicroElectroMechanic Systems) technology to Turkey, he has won a number of national and international awards for his work and is just one of four scientists and academics from outside of the United States asked to participate in the National Science Foundation's "Microand Nano Systems (MNS) Horizon 2040" workshop.Both sessions will be moderated by İzzet Memi, the author of the book "Açık Ruh Ameliyatı" (Open Soul Surgery), who is himself on a self-proclaimed "journey of awareness."This particular TedX Istanbul vent will be held entirely in Turkish and due to the nature of the number of speakers on hand, unfortunately there will not be simultaneous translation. While tickets for this event are reflective of its being a very special opportunity to hear a number of speakers all at once, they are also fast selling out leaving only the most expensive seats to what was already quite a costly event. When first made available student tickets started out at TL 75 ($23) and regular seating at TL 100, however this late in the game, tickets for the event are now TL 200 and TL 250 and are available for purchase on Biletix. Attendants will also be eligible to receive a participation certificate if they previously fill out the required form found on the Tedx Istanbul website.
