Summer is finally here, so it is time to take the fun outside. This July, Istanbul will be hosting a number of entertaining events for both locals and expats



Do not let the summer heat trap you inside. This July, there will be a number of entertaining events to get you moving outside in the company of fellow foreigners and expats. The following is a list of events to get you moving, grooving and mingling this month in Istanbul:

June 30- Bomontiada Courtyard Yoga

Why not kick off the month with yoga at Bomontiada. The historic brewery-turned-entertainment and arts complex will be opening its doors this summer to offer free outdoor yoga sessions on Friday mornings from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. These sessions are open to all, including kids, however guests are asked to bring their own mats.

June 30- Jazz Vocalist Open Mike Night at Kaset Mitanni​

Did you ever want to try your hand at singing like Billie Holiday, Elle Fitzgerald or Louis Armstrong? If so, don't miss your chance at the very special "Jazz Vocalist Open Mike Night" taking place on today at 10 p.m. at Kaset Mitanni located on Barbaros Boulevard in Beşiktaş. A regular jazz haunt offering live nightly performances, the open mike night will feature an in house band with Umut Deniz on guitar, bassist Alex İman and drummer Burak Cihangirli playing a repertoire of jazz favorites for vocalists wanting to give the stage a go.

July 1- A Yabangee Get Together

Tomorrow, Yabangee, the website devoted to dishing advice and keeping expats up-to-date on events in Istanbul, will be kicking off their newest event series, a monthly "Get Together" in Istanbul with DJ tunes and discount prices. This month's event will take place at 5B located near Galatasaray High School in Beyoğlu's Tom Tom neighborhood and will take place between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. Admission is free.

July 2 – Istanbul & I Fundraiser

On Sunday, July 2, Istanbul&I, the global volunteer youth community dedicated to social impact and working with displaced and disadvantaged groups in Istanbul, will be partnering with the Syrian restaurant Tarbuş for a special fundraiser. Located in Fatih, Tarbuş will be offering a unique menu and donating 30 percent of the profits to charity. The event, which boasts the slogan "Eat, Enjoy, Donate," will take place from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m.

July 8 - Moda Kite Festival

The grassy knolls of Moda shore is the perfect backdrop for this colorful kite festival on Saturday, July 8 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Kite lovers of all ages are welcome and encouraged to bring their own kites or to purchase or make a kite at the stands that will be set up in this lively neighborhood in Kadiköy.

July 8- Run by Night in the Belgrad Forest

Run your socks off at this summer's only organized night run in the Belgrad Forest. "Geyik Koşuları by Night" will take place on the evening of July 8 and will be divided into four categories for all levels of runners: 28K, 14K, 4K and a "bambi run" for children ages 4 to 12. The event will start at 5:05 p.m. with the 28K and the races set up for the young ones, namely a 200-meter run for 4 to 6 year olds, a 300-meter run for children ages 7 to 9 and a 500-meter run for kids ages 10 to 12. The 14K will start at 8:25 p.m. and the 4K contenders will set off at 8:45 p.m. To register for this fun trail run and the unique opportunity to experience the Belgrad Forest at night visit www.geyikkosulari.com.

July 18- Kanyon Summer Milonga

On Tuesday, July 18, there will be a Summer Milonga held in the lower level courtyard of the plush Kanyon Shopping Center in Levent. This fun and free event will feature outdoor tango dancing with DJ Serçin Bediroğlu, as well as dance performances by Kadir Yüceer and Gözde Nur Şahin from 7:30 to 11:45 p.m., with a Chacarera Workshop held between 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. if there is enough demand.

July 21- Yabancı Değiliz at James Joyce

Istanbul's first-ever expat band Yabancı Değiliz, an alternative rock group founded in 2006, have performed all over Turkey in esteemed venues and will be reuniting for a performance at the James Joyce Irish Pub, located on Balo Street, just off Istiklal Avenue, starting at 10 p.m. Made up of vocalist Chris Levenborg, James Traas on guitar, keyboard and vocals, bassist William Levenberg, Sam Kill on guitar and vocals and drummer Erik Levenborg, Yabancı Değiliz actually played their last show in March 2015. Reuniting for fans this night only for a show featuring cover favorites and originals in both Turkish and English, the musicians hail from the U.S., Denmark and the U.K. After the break up, four of the group's members went on to form the band Levenbirds based in Los Angeles.

July 22- Neo & Jay 'Magic Travel'

On Saturday, July 22 from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. the Magic Lamp, located in Beyoğlu's Asmalı Mescit, will be hosting a special show by Neo & Jay, a world-renowned illusionist married couple from Sydney. Both award winning magicians in their own right, the English-speaking couple will awe the audience in a night of magic.

July 23- Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swimming Race

With thousands of participants from all over the world competing in 12 different age categories, the annual "Samsung Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swimming Race" has become the most popular cross-continent swimming competition in the world. Though registration came to a close in March, and the lucky chosen will be announced on July 3, you can still watch the event on Sunday, July 23, starting from the Kanlıca ferry port on the Asian side of the city at 10 a.m. and ending at Kuruçeşme on the European side, followed by an awards ceremony from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. As thousands come out for the event making it a whole weekend affair, the organization will also be hosting discovery trips organized for Friday and a pasta party on Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by a show swim from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
