Say farewell to summer with expat events in September

With the coming of the new season, September will be a month of entertaining events hosted by or for expats



For some, the month of September is a time of regrouping and resuming the usual pastimes people pursue prior to the summer months. Many of the event series hosted by the expat community in Istanbul will be returning this month. Therefore it is a good time to check out the great events in Istanbul to get you back in the urban groove again.

Here are this month's events:

Celebrate world music

Yabangee, which is a volunteer-run English-language website and community for foreigners that also hosts a number of events, resumes with their Sunday night series at Beat with Latin Night: A Celebration of World Music. The event begins at 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 2 and goes on into the early hours of the morning and takes place on the terrace at Beat, which is located on Yeşilçam Sokak in Beyoğlu.

Pub Story & Yabangee present: Come Together!

Pub Story is an original event series founded in Istanbul that takes over venues to host an innovative game in which everyone participating interacts through utilizing a custom designed mobile app. This event series has exploded in popularity and is now held regularly in cities all over Turkey. On Sept. 5, Pub Story will be teaming up with Yabangee to host their first event in English at Los Altos, a chic Mexican restaurant in Beyoğlu overlooking the Bosphorus. Early bird tickets are 50 TL ($7.60) and entrance will be 60 TL at the door.

Participants are welcome to come alone or in groups as the nature of the game will have you socializing with others outside of your circle. The point of Pub Story is to make lasting memories and friends so it is a great opportunity to mingle. In addition to hosting a number of Pub Story nights this month in Istanbul at venues such as the IF Performance Hall in Beşiktaş and at Tamirane, Pub Story will also be held in Ankara, Antalya and Izmir.

Flashback Night at Beat

On Thursday, Sept. 6, Yabangee will be bringing back their Flashback Nights at Beat in Beyoğlu where classic hits from the past are blasted throughout the night. Entrance is free, the events starts at 10:30 p.m.Indonesia Day

The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia will be hosting "Indonesia Day: Lombok's Earthquake Charity Bazaar," which will take place at the Conrad Hotel in Beşiktaş on Saturday, Sept. 8 from noon to 6 p.m. Entrance is free and there will be traditional dances and a fashion show as well as handicrafts from Indonesia and workshops on Indonesian cooking and using the art technique of Batik. Indonesia's volcanic island of Lombok has been experiencing a series of devastating earthquakes starting with a 6.4 magnitude on July 29 and a near seven magnitude quake on Aug. 5. In mid-August, there were two more rattlers over six in magnitude and just last week on Aug. 25, Lombok was struck by a 5.7 magnitude earthquake. The quakes have devastated the region and resulted in casualties in the hundreds.

Pop-up Dinners Istanbul presents Suriname Pop-up

Hosted by Kay, a Dutch Singaporean expat and former restaurateur from her home in Cihangir, Pop-up Dinners Istanbul is a widely popular themed dinner series which offers nearly by monthly menus from all over the world. On Saturday, Sept. 8, Kay returns with a dinner centered on the Caribbean country that was once a Dutch colony. Influenced by a number of ethnic cuisines, including Chinese, African and Indonesian, the menu for the Suriname meal includes exotic specialties such as bara balls, peanut soup, pom with beef and piccalilli, chicken curry, nasi goring, bakkaljaw sambal and bojo cake.

Summer's End Potluck Picnic

Starting at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9, the Yabangee community will be meeting at Maçka Park for a "Summer's End Potluck Picnic." As per potluck style, everyone attending prepares or brings a dish or snacks to share. Visit the Yabangee Facebook page to find out the precise meet-up destination and if you want to share what you plan to on bringing.

Yabangee Trivia Night #13

Yabangee's Trivia Night series resumes with their 13th edition after a summer hiatus on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at the new Arsen Lüpen in Beşiktaş. There are maximum six members to each team and participants are welcome to come alone and be matched up into a team. No cell phones are allowed during the game and the questions will be read out in English and in Turkish. There is a 10 TL participation fee and the top three teams win prizes. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the quiz will begin at 8 p.m.

On the same day the following week, Yabangee's trivia series returns with A Game of Thrones Trivia Night. Once again questions will be asked in English and Turkish in this opportunity to test your knowledge on the ultra-popular show. Check out the Yabangee website for details.

Expat Spotlight #14

Expat Spotlight is a monthly talk series held by Yabangee at ATÖLYE where expats take the stage to share their experiences based on different themes. On Monday, Sept. 17, the 14th edition of the series will be focusing on "Design" and as always entrance is free to this event, which is held in English and begins at 7 p.m. at the interdisciplinary innovation platform and creative hub ATÖLYE, which is located within Bomontiada, the historical beer factory-turned entertainment complex.

Black Out UV Paint Party

On Wednesday, Sept. 23, Yabangee will be going out of the box to host a Black Out UV Paint Party at Beat in Beyoğlu. Entrance is free and the event begins at 10:30 p.m. Guests are advised to wear white to better showcase the paint and to let their creativity flow.

Balkan Nights: A Celebration of World Music

On Thursday, Sept. 27, Yabangee will be gathering at Beat for "Balkan Nights: A Celebration of World Music." Entrance is free and the event starts at 10:30 p.m.

Africa Night at Beat

On Sunday, Sept. 30, Yabangee closes out the month with a night devoted to African music as part of their "A Celebration of World Music" series. The event will take place at Beat, entrance is free and the music begins at 10:30 p.m.
