There's no trick-or-treating, but Turks take on Halloween in style
Halloween might not be a Turkish tradition but surely people living in Turkey will not miss a series of entertaining events. If you are interested in joining Halloween parties that will take place all over Istanbul as well as in Ankara and İzmir make sure to prepare your costume
This Saturday is Halloween, otherwise known as All Hallow's Eve or Cadılar Bayramı in Turkish, an annual remembrance of the dead celebrated by dressing up in costumes, which is observed in a number of countries around the world. Hailing from the United States, this happens to be my favorite holiday, as children dress up and go door-to-door yelling "trick or treat" so that each neighbor fills their baskets with candy. Although this tradition hasn't quite made it across the pond (yet), the Turks have indeed embraced Halloween in their own celebratory style by way of blow-out parties over this holiday weekend in some of the most happening spots around town. So, don't fret expats if you're missing home on this spookiest of holidays, as Turkey does the day justice with a long list of events lined-up for Oct. 31. I have picked through the cream of the crop for a Turkish taste of home by way of celebrating Halloween.Yabangee Halloween Bash III in BeyoğluYabangee.com, an online community that connects English speakers with events and resources in the city, will be holding their third annual Halloween Bash on Friday at Secret Garden's new venue on Balo Street in Beyoğlu. Izmir also celebrates Halloween with a variety of parties scheduled for the weekend. The most intriguing and spooky will be held at 1888, a building named after the year it was built. Supposedly, the daughter of the woman the building was built for, died on Halloween night in 1901 in the fires that were set alight on the grounds to ward off the spirits on this night of remembrance of the dead. Said to be haunted, this may just be the perfect space to spend the spookiest of Halloweens at their costume party that will kick off at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday.
