Self-help and personal development has become a rising topic in Turkey with centers offering workshops and seminars for the masses seeking further fulfillment



There are now many Turkish self-help "gurus" that actively offer motivational talks and publish book after book on how to be a better version of ourselves. More and more, these books are being translated and released in English for us, the expat reader, to enjoy and get a new perspective on personal development with a Turkish twist. The following is a list, in no particular order, of the Turkish-penned self-help genre on offer in English.Invasion Of Love: The Path by Metin HaraThe first book in the three-part bestseller series that has made this young and dynamic author and motivational speaker a star, "Invasion of Love: The Path" is his first English-language publication. The 424-page guide released this year challenges readers to change their perceptions and understand that the only obstacle is the mind. Born in 1982 in Istanbul, Hara studied physical therapy and rehabilitation at Çapa University, which led to him combining a number of medical, physical and spiritual healing techniques in his seminars and books, which have seen unprecedented success. In 2014 he established the Trusthuman Academy to further share his highly pursued methods.A Breath of Istanbul by Aret VartanyanBorn in 1978, Aret Vartanyan grew up in Beyoğlu where he began seeking the mystery of life and humanity leading him to study Eastern philosophy and receive a graduate degree in communications and a scholarship in theology at Oxford University. After working as a corporate communications advisor, in 2008, Aret published his first book, followed by five more, and opened Turkey's first-ever personal development center, his Yaşam Atölyesi Kişisel Dönüşüm Akademisi, located in Beyoglu's iconic Mısır Apartments, which now boasts over a million members. He regularly gives motivational talks including this month's "Are you really living", based on his bestseller and also has an upcoming seminar on finding love. Released just last month, "A Breath of Istanbul" is Vartanyan's first English publication and is about living in harmony, drawing from the harmonious way all of the different cultures and religions have historically inhabited the metropolis.Unlimit Yourself by Mümin SekmanDubbed "The Success Guru," Mümin Sekman is one of Turkey's leading self-improvement authors whose expertise is unsurprisingly on achieving success. Originally, a law student he ended up becoming more interested in figuring out the laws of success. He wrote his first book at the age of 21 and has written ten thus far. His main finding is that success can be learned with passion, technique and courage. Over 2 million of his books have been printed and over 100,000 have attended his seminars. "Unlimit Yourself," which is now available in English, has sold over 300,000 worldwide. This 150-page book draws on a wealth of sources to offer wisdom and techniques to comprehend the boundless limits of success.The Secret's Secret by Özer Uçuran ÇillerThis businessman, writer, engineer and husband to former Prime Minister Tansu Çiller, has also spent his life seeking to decode the law of attraction. By combining the spirituality of the East and the logic and modern science of the West, he has found a number of "secrets" that can change people's lives for the better. He has written 10 books, including the 232-page English-language version of his bestseller "The Secret's Secret: Unlocking the Secrets of True Health and Happiness," which was published in 2012.The Butterfly Inside Your Palm by Ahmet Şerif İzgörenBorn in Izmir in 1965, İzgören has a military education background coupled with an English degree. He started up the Bursa branch of TÖMER, the most proficient Turkish language course for foreigners in the country and is also the creative funder of the Türkiye Uğur Böcekleri project, which aims to impart strong entrepreneurial values of honesty, quality of work, tolerance, as well as national pride. İzgören has published over 20 books that focus on a wide variety of personal development topics focusing on communication and success as well as in the business world. "The Butterfly Inside Your Palm" is his sole English language publication and is a 140-page book released in 2004 on societal and personal development.Feelings Run Faster by Yankı YazganA specialist in the area of child and family psychology, Yazgan doubles as a professor on board the Child Study Center at Yale University, whose focus is on neuropsychiatric disorders such as ADHD and autism. Although he has penned nearly half a dozen books on adolescent psychology as well as the popular "Kalp Çarpar Beyin Böler" (The Heart Multiplies the Brain Divides), which discusses the way the heart and the brain differ in synthesizing situations, Yazgan's English-language publication, "Feelings Run Faster," is a very different take on a self-help book. This 172-page book released in 2012, contains his own illustrations from the 1960s to 1990s to help the reader humorously discover themselves through their daily thoughts and concerns with Turkey and more specifically, Istanbul as the backdrop.Other authors to look out forAlthough all of the above-mentioned authors have a prolific list of works in the self-help genre well worth checking out in Turkish, there are also a number of other significantly popular books published in Turkish you may want to check out. "Evrenden Torpilim Var" by Aykut Oğut saw unprecedented success in its release in 2009 and has since been published in 275 editions. It tells the motivational story of this actor's road to success.M. Barış Muslu and his "Beynine Format At" (Format Your Brain) which focuses on reformatting your thoughts to achieve health, happiness and success has brought him just that. Born in 1975 in Turkey he went on to finish high school in two years in the U.S. and received his college degree in three years at Michigan State University, returning to Turkey at the age of 20 as an engineer. After an entrepreneurial spell, opening his own company and going to graduate school, he is now a life coach and motivational speaker sharing his knowledge on the effects of the brain on the body and soul.Beki İkala Erikli is an author noteworthy for her successful series of angel books in Turkish and Nevşah Fidan Karamehmet is the Turkish expert in breath techniques for finding happiness and healing.,
